Sclerotherapy

The sclerotherapy treatment involves injecting a specific solution (usually hypertonic saline (salt)) into these capillaries/veins, using a small needle.  A tiny needle is used to inject the veins with a medication that irritates the lining of the vein. In response, the veins collapse and are reabsorbed. The surface veins are no longer visible.

How long does it take for results?

You may need anywhere from one to several treatment sessions depending on the extent of the spider veins.  The treated area generally requires three days to recover (frequently insect-like welts and subtle bruising) and it frequently takes three weeks to begin to see significant fading of the vessels.  It can take a few months for them to completely fade especially farther down on the legs.  The goal is to make the areas greatly better.  Perfect is very hard to achieve with leg veins.

What's the recovery time?

Generally there is no discomfort after the procedure.  Abstaining from vigorous physical activity for three days is recommended. Depending on the areas treated an Ace wrap (compression bandage) may be used for three days and occasionally patients are asked to get compression stockings which can be worn for up to one week. Although pigmentation almost always fades, it can last for several months.

Is it right for me?

Larger veins or varicosities frequently need to be treated surgically or with other more aggressive procedures than sclerotherapy.  Occasionally, patients also ask for treatments for normal vasculature.  The best way to know if you are an appropriate candidate is to come in for a consultation.
