If you ever wished you could melt away fat, then the CoolSculpting system, a non-surgical body contouring option, may be for you. With innovative technology, CoolSculpting treatments help our patients from Worcester and Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and beyond reduce fat around their midsections, thighs, arms, and backs without surgery, needles, or anesthesia. Dr. Seth Kates or one of his medical associates can design a treatment plan for each individual, defining the areas of the body that can be shaped using a fat-cooling device that leaves skin and muscle unharmed.

Dr. Kates: Dermatologist & CoolSculpting Patient
Dr. Kates underwent a CoolSculpting procedure of his own and is excited by the results he saw on his flanks and abdomen.
What Is CoolSculpting?
The FDA-cleared CoolSculpting system uses an exclusive process called Cryolipolysis® to selectively freeze unwanted fat cells, disrupting their structure and eventually causing them to leave the body naturally. Because fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than skin, muscle, and other types of tissue, Cryolipolysis doesn't damage healthy tissue and doesn't leave behind scars. Developed by Harvard-based researchers, Cryolipolysis is highly effective at removing localized areas of stubborn fat that doesn't respond to diet and exercise. Popular treatment areas include:
- Flanks and "love handles"
- Inner and outer thighs
- Back and "bra roll" area
A CoolSculpting treatment doesn't require incisions, needles, or anesthesia of any sort.
Who Can Benefit From CoolSculpting?
Before considering a CoolSculpting treatment, it's important to understand that the procedure is not intended to be a treatment for obesity. Instead, the ideal CoolSculpting candidate is a man or woman who is within 10 or 15 pounds of his or her ideal weight. However, he or she is bothered by stubborn areas of fat that are very difficult to reduce through diet and exercise. This person wants his or her clothes to fit better and to feel more confident in a swimsuit or during intimacy. Most candidates choose CoolSculpting treatments because it's a needle-free, non-invasive method for reducing stubborn pockets of fat without the need for recuperation or downtime.
During your initial consultation, your dermatologist talks to you about your desired outcome and helps you understand the type of results you can expect. Sometimes, patients choose to further complement their results with additional treatments, such as laser hair removal. Regardless of your aesthetic goals, we can help you reveal your most beautiful self with our selection of cosmetic dermatology services.
Before & After Photos
The CoolSculpting Experience
After receiving a treatment plan based on a careful medical evaluation at one of our cosmetic and medical dermatology offices in Massachusetts, you'll visit us for your CoolSculpting procedure. We may recommend a series of several sessions depending on the number of areas you wish to treat. Prior to your CoolSculpting treatment, you don't need to fast or take any other special precautions. We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and bringing a tablet, book, or magazine to keep you occupied during your treatment.
Your practitioner first applies a cool gel pad to your treatment area. This pad helps regulate temperature and protect your skin. Your practitioner then applies a CoolSculpting treatment head over the gel pad. There are different treatment heads for different areas. If you want to target areas of "pinchable" fat, such as on the abdomen, the device uses suction to draw up a fatty bulge between its cooling panels. If you want to treat "non-pinchable fat," such as on the thighs, a flat treatment head is strapped to your body with the cooling plates pressed against your skin.
You'll experience a brief period of intense cold. After several minutes, the treatment area typically goes numb. In order to get the best results possible, the CoolSculpting treatment head must be in place for about 1 hour for pinchable fat and 2 hours or more for non-pinchable fat. During this time, you may read, listen to music, browse the Internet, or watch a movie on your personal device. Some patients even choose to fit in a nap.
Recovery and Results
After your CoolSculpting procedure, your treated areas will likely be red and swollen. This is normal and a good indication that the treatment was effective. Most patients can return to their usual activities immediately, although they may feel some soreness and discomfort. These symptoms typically resolve on their own within a few days.
The results of a CoolSculpting treatment are not immediate. Instead, over the course of 2 to 4 months, you'll notice your treated areas gradually shrink and smooth out, revealing refined, proportionate contours. Most people can expect to achieve a 20 to 25% reduction of fat in their treated areas. Although most people are satisfied with their results after 1 treatment, others choose to undergo additional treatments for more significant results. We can help you understand the results you can expect and whether or not you may benefit from additional treatments
As your new, slimmer physique gradually emerges, you'll be amazed by how effective and easy CoolSculpting treatments can be. To get started on your journey to your best body, request a cosmetic consultation online or call us at 508-754-3823 in Worcester or 978-256-4151 in Chelmsford
